  • Honoring Hispanic Heritage As Air Force Leaders: The 5th CES Triad

CMSgt. Lester Largaespada, Lt. Col. David Dammeier, and SMSgt. Sergio Gonzalez compose the leadership triad for the 5th Civil Engineer Squadron at Minot Air Force Base, N.D. The three share Hispanic roots that have played an important role in their growth with the Air Force and developing their cohesive leadership team.
  • September Diaper Drive Almost Doubles Down

With a goal of 10,000 diapers to be collected in the month of September, SSgt Andrea Payne hit the ground running with a challenge to all Minot Air Force Base squadrons to “get on board” with a grand prize of a Papa John’s pizza party on the line for the winning squadron. Her message was obviously well received as her September Diaper Drive collected 17,200 diapers and 7,000 wipes, almost twice as many as her original goal.
  • Minot AFB Spouses Pay Respects to Fallen Troops

The current events in Afghanistan have sent shockwaves and heartbreak throughout the military community as men and women from every branch are being called to action. One spouse decided to light a fire in the hearts of the people at Minot Air Force Base and spark a show of solidarity for those service members and their families.
  • Volunteering Airmen: A Day in the Life

SSgt. Calvin Navarro is an all-around handyman. When he’s not working as a maintainer for the 91st Missile Maintenance Squadron at Minot Air Force Base, he is volunteering his skills to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center in Minot, N.D.
  • Operation Homefront: Back to School Brigade

On Aug. 6, 2021, the Minot Air Force Base Youth Center partnered with national nonprofit Operation Homefront to hold their annual Back to School Brigade. The event offered free resources and support to military families as children are heading back to school, which can be a hectic (and expensive) time of year.

  • Local Girl Scouts Perform Random Acts of Kindness

In early 2021, Girl Scout Junior Troop 10284 at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., sold over 3,000 boxes of cookies. Some of the money went towards a camping trip to Turtle River State Park in June, where the girls had a chance to swim in the river, geocache, and build strong relationships through a weekend of outdoor activity.
  • You Made My Day

I have the trip to Minot Air Force Base memorized pretty well. Once off the bypass and headed north on Highway 83, I begin to scan the horizon for B52’s or Huey helicopters above the base.
  • From Flyovers to Field Work

Capt. Katie Spencer never planned to join the Air Force Reserves. But after graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications (and since then a Master’s from Georgetown University), she found herself struggling to find a job. Her mother, who had served in the Reserves for 33 years, encouraged her to explore the option of enlisting. It was a hard “no” from Spencer. After a little more persuasion from her mom, she finally caved in and went to a recruiter. The rest was history.
  • A View From Our Side

I was given the opportunity to “tag along” on a recent tour. The tour guide? A young Airman named Evan on his first assignment. I met the gentlemen taking the tour; he was a member of the 91st Missile Wing from 1967. Tom Grabowski was returning to Minot Air Force Base for the first time since his almost four years here as a member of the 740th Missile Squadron, also known as the Vulgar Vultures…then and now.
