Relay to fight cancer Published March 16, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Jessica McConnell Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Minot Air Force Base Company Grade Officer Council is forming a team to participate in this year's Relay for Life fundraiser, hosted by the city of Minot and scheduled to kick off on the evening of June 10. "Relay for Life is the world's largest movement against cancer," said Air Force Global Strike Command 1st Lt. Alicia Padrick, 91st Operations Group deputy ICBM combat crew evaluator. "Every year, millions of people gather to remember those they have lost, celebrate those who have survived and raise money towards finding a cure." Team Minot Airmen and their families can volunteer and support the cause in a variety of ways. "We encourage people to join our relay team or help raise funds and awareness to save lives by donating to our team," said Lieutenant Padrick. "Spouses, dependents and civilians are more than welcome to join." Last year's team consisted of ten members. Through various fundraising efforts, the team was able to raise approximately $1,500. "It rained the entire time, but we had fun and sold burgers, bratwursts and hot chocolate throughout the night," said Lieutenant Padrick of last year's event. "We had at least four people at one time during the event, rotating throughout the night." If unable to attend the event, other opportunities to raise money are planned for the near future. "Last year we hosted a poker tournament, which raised $200," said Lieutenant Padrick. "We might be doing the same this year and hope to make it even bigger." The event is planned to start at 7 p.m. and end at dawn. If unable to volunteer during the actual event or other fundraisers, luminaries are also available to purchase at $10 a piece. Luminaries represent individuals who have been affected by cancer, and may be purchased in honor of those fighting for a cure. Anyone is free to make a general donation as well. If interested in helping, please email Lieutenant Padrick or visit http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=34047&pg=entry for more information.
