If one feels themselves developing the sniffles, they are advised to take zinc, as studies have shown boosting zinc intake can help ward off colds.

Zinc is an element in the earth's crust. In fact, it is among one of the most common. While too much zinc is dangerous, the human body needs zinc for certain functions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the most important reasons we need zinc is to keep the immune system strong and vibrant.

However, it is important to ensure people are taking in the recommended intake of zinc as too much could prove harmful to the body.

Below is a list of foods listed from the National Institutes of Health. Also included is a chart with the recommended dietary intake for zinc.

· Oysters or crab
· Baked beans, canned
· Raisin bran cereal
· Cashews
· Lowfat yogurt and fruit

· Red meats, such as beef or pork
