The Minot Air Force Base Tax Center will open Feb. 7 and will remain open until April 17. The tax center offers free advice, assistance, preparation, and electronic filing of federal and state income tax returns through the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

Tax assistance priority will be given to military personnel. However, military dependents, retirees, Department of Defense civilian personnel and childcare providers may receive assistance from the tax center on a space-available basis.

Many squadrons also have unit tax advisors who can assist personnel with filing their taxes.

To receive tax preparation/e-filing assistance, one must make an appointment and bring in the following items:

· Photo ID
· Proof of social security number (acceptable proof only includes an actual social security card, a copy of a previously filed tax return, or a letter from the Social Security Administration).
· All W2s (Tax Center will NOT print W2s)
· Any other paperwork related to one's taxes.
· An Intake/Interview Sheet (Form 13614-C) must be accomplished prior to one's appointment. This can be located at: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/13614-c.pdf or stop by the tax center where it can be provided.

If any payments were received from a Do It Yourself move during 2011, personnel must wait to file until a DITY move W2 is received from DFAS. Expect those W2s to be delivered sometime in February.

Deployments can create many special tax issues. If a person is in a deployment status January through April and cannot file during open tax season, that person's filing season will be automatically extended by two months if on duty outside the U.S. or 180 days after one's last day in a qualified combat zone.

To get refunded earlier, deployed personnel can authorize another individual a power of attorney to file taxes on their behalf while deployed. If personnel did deploy in 2011, income received during that time may be exempt from federal taxation.

The tax office will prepare the following forms: 1040EZ, 1040A with corresponding schedules, and 1040 with corresponding schedules. The following returns are out of scope and will not be prepared by this office: self employment, rentals and any property effected by the 2011 Minot flood. The tax office requests flood victims contact the office for further guidance.

The tax center is located in the Pride building through the West entrance on the second floor.

Starting Feb. 7 until April 17, the tax center's hours will be as follows:

Mondays & Fridays - Drop offs (copies of all required documents must be provided)
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: Appointment only 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Thursday Evenings: Appointment Only 5 -8 p.m.
Saturday Mornings: Appointment Only 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
