Janiece Mitchner, a local Girl Scout from Minot Air Force Base, N.D., has recently received her Silver Award! She and her family have been stationed at Minot AFB for 7 years. Janiece is the oldest Girl Scout for the Minot AFB Service Unit. She has been a Scout since Kindergarten starting as a Daisy and will bridge to Seniors this May. She is currently part of the Cadette Troop #10312.

In the Girl Scouts, there are 3 higher girl awards that can be earned. A Bronze Award, which Janiece earned in 2018, A Silver Award and a Gold award. Janiece decided to work on her Silver Award and used her Nana, Sara, who lives in Texas, as inspiration. After her Nana was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, she wanted to find a way for people who were going through treatment and losing their hair to have some comfort and a small token while there. So, she decided to make chemo hats out of donated t-shirts. Janiece created a flyer asking the base community for t-shirt donations and Minot AFB came through with a large number of shirts that were dropped off at her home or picked up by her and her mom. Once all hat templates were cut out with help from her family, she used her mom’s sewing machine to make all 200 hats. Hats will be distributed to the Minot Cancer Center and the Children’s Center in Fargo, N.D. To sustain her project, Janiece gave her plans to her FACs teacher in the hopes of using it as a yearly class project.

A Girl Scouts Awards banquet will be held in Fargo in June to honor all the girls across N.D., S.D. and Minn. who achieved this award.

Congratulations Janiece!
