As his last visit to Minot Air Force Base in his current position, the Eighth Air Force commander met with Airmen throughout the 5th Bomb Wing and visited several construction projects, Sept. 3-6.

In addition to visiting ongoing projects, Maj. Gen. Stephen W. Wilson toured the new air traffic control tower and base operations building, which he noted upon landing here.

The tower and base ops building were two of many examples of the progress being made here, said Wilson, who has been in command for just over two years.

"They are nice facilities," said Wilson. "They're the benchmark certainly for the command, and they could be the benchmark for the Air Force."

During an address to more than 300 Airman of the 5th BW, Wilson thanked them for their contributions to the ongoing deterrence mission, highlighting the importance of proper equipment and facilities.

"The mission you do is of critical significance to our nation," said Wilson, who has been selected to take over as commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. "We are going to do our best to give you the resources and facilities to do the mission right."

The general went on to discuss the importance of every Airman's individual contribution to the mission and how its success depends on the ability to work as a team. He stressed without any one part of the team, the mission will fail.

"Every Airman matters, and you're all part of this incredible team," said Wilson. "This is an amazing, world-class, unbelievably fit team that will deter any adversary."

Wilson also covered the importance of the Air Force's nuclear deterrence mission, discussing a new strategic plan for the upcoming year signed by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Secretary of the Air Force, which solidified the nuclear mission as a top priority for the Air Force.

"I look around the room, and this is our future," said Wilson, to a mixed audience of officers and enlisted of nearly all ranks. "I know the nuclear enterprise will be well taken care of."

Wilson concluded the address by discussing some of the fiscal challenges facing the force over the coming years. Despite continual drawdown, the deterrence mission of the 5th BW is an investment in the safety and security of the nation. By modernizing the force, it will strengthen and invigorate the nuclear enterprise, but the cornerstone remains the men and women of the 5th BW.

"I know only the best come north," added Wilson, "and the 5th Bomb Wing is up for the challenge."
