We have all seen the "help wanted" and "now hiring" signs advertised on nearly every business window around the Minot local area. With so many jobs available, Airmen may reasonably consider a second job to earn additional income or to enhance their résumé.
A second job can be valuable, especially when Airman follow proper procedures for off-duty employment.

According to the Department of Defense Directive 5500.07-R, section 2-206a, Joint Ethics Regulation, off-duty employment must not detract from military readiness, must not pose a security risk, and must not bring discredit upon the Air Force. Medical personnel must also comply with Air Force Instruction 44-102, Medical Care Management, in addition to Joint Ethics Regulation, which covers specific requirements for obtaining and maintaining off-duty employment while serving in the medical career field.

These regulations seek to prevent Air Force personnel from taking on extra work that could detract from their military duties, weaken base security, and present the military in a negative light among the local community.

Airman and certain civilian personnel considering whether to apply for an off-duty job should first decide whether having that extra workload will take away from their ability to perform their military duty.

Airmen interested in pursuing off-duty employment should fill out AF IMT 3902, Application and Approval for Off-Duty employment. This form must be completed and routed through their supervisor, local legal office, and unit commander, who is the final approval authority.

It is important to note that AF IMT 3092 must also be accomplished if Airmen intend to work while on terminal leave. Airmen who fail to comply with the requirements for off-duty employment are subject to disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
