More than 60 Team Minot Airmen and their family members gathered as Darby the Dak-rat, the lovable mascot of the 5th Force Support Squadron, was officially retired at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., May 15, 2014.

For 20 years, Darby has faithfully served as a goodwill ambassador at base-wide events. Whether he was entertaining kids at the annual summer block party or standing at the gate with Airmen, helping to promote DUI awareness, Darby has touched a wide variety of Minot AFB residents during his tenure.

To celebrate Darby's retirement, members of the 5th FSS hosted a party at Rough Riders. The Hawaiian-themed party featured games, dancing, balloon animals, face-painting, inflatables and a limbo contest. There was also a card-making station, where attendees were able to design retirement cards for Darby.

Several of Darby's mascot friends, such as McGruff the crime dog, Sparky, Buckshot, Smokey Bear, and Tank attended to show their support as well. Another highlight of the party was the introduction of Darby's replacement. Darby handed over the mascot duties to his great friend Darcy the Dragon. Darcy came out and greeted the attendees to show her support of Darby and her excitement to be at Minot AFB.

As the evening progressed, Darby made his way around the party to spend his last few moments with Team Minot family members and say his farewells. Children embraced him while the older crowd gave him high-fives. He posed for photos and danced to the Hawaiian music. Cake and cupcakes were also provided to celebrate the occasion.

Darby looks forward to his retirement, he said. He plans to move to Hawaii and spend his days relaxing at the beach and golfing. Although he looks forward to his new life, he will miss Minot. He will forever remember his many memories of all the people he has encountered over the years. He left Team Minot residents with a very special message.

"Thank you to all the dedicated and hard-working personnel at Minot AFB who serve and protect our country, and a special thanks to the families, spouses and children who support them," Darby said. "It has been a pleasure being the 5th FSS mascot and part of Team Minot. Through my time here, I can attest to the fact that only the best come north!"
