In 1953, President Eisenhower declared National Nurse's Week to be observed October 11-16, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's mission to Crimea.

In 1981, New Mexico made a resolution to have May 6 as National Nurse's Day and the proposal was signed by President Reagan but was later expanded by the American Nurses Association in 1990 to encompass a week-long celebration.  This year's nurse and technician celebration is focusing on the history of nursing during the conflicts and wars our nation has faced, beginning with Florence Nightingale.

Today, National Nurse's Week begins each year on May 6 and ends May 12, which is when Florence Nightingale was born. The Air Force Nurse Corporation celebrates the hard work, dedication and sacrifices made by our nurses and medical technicians. Whether they work in a clinic, office or at the bedside, they are busy caring for the active-duty military and their dependents, resulting in a fit to fight Air Force. The 5th Medical Group celebrates them for their compassion, dedication and high quality health care that they deliver.
