Airman helping Airmen Published May 18, 2015 By Senior Airman Kristoffer Kaubisch Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Math was always his favorite subject growing up. He has competed on math teams since he was in the 6th grade and has taken math classes all the way up to College Calculus. Now he is putting his math knowledge to good use and helping other Airmen receive college credits through college level examination program courses. Senior Airman Huntur Soper, 5th Munitions Squadron munitions controller, has volunteered his own off-time from work to teach Airmen math CLEP courses at the education center. "I wanted to get away from normal volunteering and do something different that helps people out in a different way. Math is something I'm good at, so I went with that," Soper said. Soper explained how he has always enjoyed math because each question was like solving a puzzle. "It's not remembering facts or other information; it's just trying to figure out a way to get to the end," Soper said. Soper is teaching two different math CLEP prep courses; College Mathematics and College Algebra. The classes are structured as 2 days a week, for 4 weeks, for an hour each class, however, Soper is planning on changing it to 2 days a week, for 1 week, and 2 hours each class. "I think that a 4 week commitment is difficult for some people depending on their schedules, so for a future class, I want to do Tuesday's and Thursday's for 1 week and 2 hours per class, just to make it a little easier for people so it's not stretched out over a month time span," Soper said. "I think that if it was a shorter class, more people would sign up." Soper hopes to continue teaching classes to help out fellow Airmen to achieve their Community College of the Air Force degree. "Ultimately, I hope the students from my class get a college credit. Whether they choose to retain it and go onto another math class, that's up to them," said Soper. "I know people that just needed a math class to finish their CCAF degree, so I tell them to come to my class and I will help them get their degree taken care of and it works." CLEP exams are a popular alternative for many of today's college students who don't want to waste time taking unnecessary courses. No matter what your age or academic history, you can benefit from CLEP exams. "College credits last for the rest of your life. At the end of the day, I hope the Airmen receive a college credit after attending my classes," Soper said.
