According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 240 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries during the month around the 4th of July.

Fireworks are a traditional part of 4th of July celebrations, but their misuse can be dangerous, and even fatal.

The use of fireworks is prohibited on Minot Air Force Base, and those who choose to use them off-base should be familiar and in adherence with local laws and regulations. Personal fireworks are allowed in Ward County, but not within the city limits of Minot.

Here are some tips for safe fireworks use according to the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

1. Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

2. Closely supervise children of any age using fireworks.

3. Even smaller fireworks can be dangerous; some sparklers burn at temperatures approaching 2000 degrees, which is hot enough to melt some metals.

4. Always back up to a safe distance after lighting a fuse, and never place any part of your body over or in the path of a fireworks device.

5. Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

6. Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

7. Keep a bucket of water or hose on hand in case of fire or another mishap.

8. Light fireworks one at a time.

9. Dispose of spent fireworks by dousing them with water before throwing them away.

10. Only use fireworks outside.

Another common 4th of July practice is grilling -- which is also a potential fire hazard. The National Fire Protection Association has some general tips for minimizing the chance of mishaps.

1. Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.

2. The grill should be placed away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

3. Keep children and pets away from the grill area.

4. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

5. Never leave your grill unattended.

6. Check any propane tanks for leaks before use.

7. Keep lighter fluid out of reach of children and away from heat sources.

Also be mindful of alcohol consumption when grilling or using fireworks, as drinking can seriously increase the risks associated with these activities.

4th of July celebrations should be fun, and nothing puts a damper on things like a serious burn or house fire. Take the extra time and effort to be safe, and make sure your Independence Day celebrations are casualty-free.
