Sometimes you have to be a loser before you can be a winner. That is the theme for Minot Air Force Base's Biggest Loser contest, set to run Feb. 14 to June 13.

According to Staff Sgt. Barbara Mendiola 5th Force Support Squadron project coordinator, the goal of the event is to encourage teamwork and promote physical fitness.

Under contest rules, teams must consist of three members. Each team's goal is to lose a high percentage of their combined body weight. The team with the largest percentage lost wins. Additionally, teams compete for the most miles accumulated. Teams can ear miles by walking, biking, basketball, attending fit-to-fight classes and much more. Initial weigh-in will be conducted Feb. 14 to 16. Team members will be required to weigh in bi-weekly on Fridays or Saturdays. Final weigh-in will be June 13.

All teams and team members are encouraged to attend either a Healthy Living Workshop or a Body Composition Improvement class at the Health and Wellness Center here. Team members attending a class will receive six miles credit. If the entire team participates, the team will receive 25 miles.

"The idea is to encourage teamwork," said Sergeant Mendiola. "This is a team-building activity and it promotes a healthy way of living at the same time."

The McAdoo Sports and Fitness Center staff stands ready to assist participants reach their goals.

"Most everybody here is a qualified personal trainer," said Airman 1st Class Liana Roray, 5th Force Support Squadron. "We can set you up with a training plan, or whatever you need. All you have to do is ask. We're more than happy to help."

For awards, each person on the winning team in the "most weight lost" category will receive a getaway package to Four Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town, N.D. The package includes a one-night stay and dinner for two, four free drinks and $40 player's cash. The prize is the same for the winning team in the "most miles" category. Additionally, second place teams will receive a large fruit basket.

Contestants can register for the contest Feb. 1 to 14.
