Skyrockets land at youth center Published Jan. 30, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Sharida Bishop Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Members of the Minot Skyrockets professional basketball organization held a free basketball camp at the David C. Jones Youth Center here Jan. 26 where more than 80 children signed up to attend. "The Skyrockets camp is a great way to teach the children of Minot Air Force Base the fundamentals of playing basketball," said Amanda Woods, recreational assistant at the youth center. During the camp, young basketball players were taught the basics of lay-ups, dribbling, passing, and boxing-out opponents while rebounding. "I think it's wonderful that the Skyrockets take time out of their busy schedule to come here and give back to the community," said Technical Sergeant Elaine McLemore, a chef with the 5th Force Support Squadron. Skyrockets' head coach Mike Daleo and the players each spoke to the children. The young basketball players soaked up what they had to say. "I go out and speak to kids because I want to make a difference," said Skyrockets' forward Sidney Holmes. The players stressed the importance of teamwork, practice and goal-setting during the visit. "When the Skyrockets speak about what it took for them to be successful, it gives children inspiration to work harder to reach goals," said Rhonda Knutson, director at the youth center. The Skyrockets signed autographs, handed out thunder sticks(a noise making device) and gave each family free tickets to attend a Skyrockets game at Minot Municipal Auditorium. "Holding events like this is one of the many reasons I became a coach," Daleo added. "We as a team are committed to staying involved in our communities and helping the youth in any way we can."
