Spring is in the air and for some people at Minot Air Force base, it gets their green thumb itching. For those folks with a passion for growing, it means one thing: garden plots.

Garden plot consignments began March 15 for people who want to maintain the same plot they had the previous year. They have until April 1 to sign for the plot and pay the $20 fee. Thereafter, the plots will be made available to anyone on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Shane Larson, the director of Outdoor Recreation, said all 24 of the 10-by-20 foot plots were used last year.

"We are also looking at adding new plots," Larson said, "We'd like to try and accommodate everyone."

Larson also said there is water available at the garden plot site, as well as a tiller for rent at outdoor rec. However, Larson said they go out prior to the opening day of May 1 and till the plots for everyone.

Larson said the plots are very popular, and there are quite a variety of things grown during the season.

"I've seen a little bit of everything," Larson said, "such as flowers, corn and lots of other vegetables."

"Most folks seem to enjoy the pastime and use it as a chance to enjoy the outdoors," Larson added.

The garden plot season ends Oct. 15, at which time the plot must be cleared out.
