Slow down! Published Sept. 17, 2008 5th Security Forces Squadron MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- As the new school year begins, the 5th Security Forces Squadron is dedicated to ensuring the safety of children and others who live, work or visit housing areas. One way to improve safety is to observe parking regulations and speed limits in and around the base and particularly in the housing area. There are many points of entry to base housing which include the following streets: Shawnee Road, "H" Street, Eagle Way, Summit Drive, Peacekeeper, Huey Lane, Cruise Missile Lane, and "E" Street. While traveling on these roads vehicle speeds must not exceed 20 mph, unless otherwise posted. If someone's destination requires them to use a side street through housing, the speed limit will decrease to 15 mph, again unless otherwise posted. Something else to be mindful of is there are three schools on Minot AFB. There is one north of Peacekeeper Place, one west of Rocket Road and the other one is north of "H" Street. When driving through school zones between the hours of 7 and 7:30 a.m., Monday to Friday or when school is in session, the speed limit will again decrease to 15 mph. However, people should always exercise vigilance in these areas because the school playgrounds are used on weekends or after the hours of 5:30 p.m. Parking on base is unlike parking in a downtown residential area. On-base residents are required to park in their assigned driveway, on the odd-numbered side of the street or other marked parking areas only. They are also prohibited from parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or cluster mailbox; on grass; on seeded or dirt areas. It is important to remember these regulations apply year-round for safety reasons. For more information, contact the 5th SFS at 723-4434.
