Staying one step ahead of bad weather Published Oct. 1, 2008 Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Summer has ended, giving way to fall and inevitably winter. With colder weather, come changes in road conditions and possibly delayed reporting for duty and school bus delays. That's where the Minot AFB public affairs office comes in. "It's important that people are kept aware of the weather conditions and how it affects them," said Maj. Elizabeth Ortiz, base PA chief. "We in public affairs are charged with ensuring the base community is made aware of the current weather conditions so they can act accordingly." Overall base PA provides three ways to access information on weather or delays: the Commander's Access Channel; the marquee; and the base information hotline (723-1190). The CAC can only be viewed on-base on Channel 10. It features weather, road conditions, force protection conditions, scrolling information, on-base events/activities and a Pentagon Channel feed. The marquee can be seen when exiting and entering the base and features FPCONs, road conditions and base events/activities. The information hotline, commonly known as "1190," relays a recorded message on road conditions and delays and can be accessed on- and off-base. 1190 is updated weekly during regular conditions and whenever the road condition changes. "Winter is coming, and it could be a bad one," said Major Ortiz, "knowing where to go to get information puts you a step ahead. "
