Knights of Columbus crown base free throw champions

Seven boys and girls from Minot AFB were named base champions of the 2009 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship at the McAdoo Fitness Center here Jan. 11.

The young sports enthusiasts also earned the right to compete against the other free throw champion winners from around the city of Minot. The Knights of Columbus Council 8003 sponsored the competition at the base fitness center, which was open to all children, ages 10 to 14.

The following were the winners of the Minot AFB championship:

12-year-old boy

14-year-old girl

14-year-old boy

Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts. One tie was settled using a best-of-five shoot-off.

Basketball players from the Minot Sky Rockets and Minot State University assisted with the competition. Sky Rocket personnel included Ronnie Fields, Aaron Spears, Royce Parran, Monte O'Quinn, Lorenzo Miles and Andria Livingston. Minot State University was represented by Mister Carney, Bojan Janjic, Demetrius Malone, Gary Heitkamp, MacKenzie Mack, Sam Medcalf and Rokki Parker.

Each of the seven free throw champions will compete in the district competition at Bishop Ryan High School in Minot Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m. Each competitor has the opportunity of moving on to state and national levels.
