J.R. Rockers offers Airmen unique dining experience Published Jan. 14, 2009 By Senior Airman Wesley Wright Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Not many sports-themed restaurants can boast the claim of making people feel like they are part of their favorite sports event by featuring almost 30 high definition televisions as well as a large menu that rivals some of the top large-chain restaurants in the United States. J.R. Rockers can. The sports-themed restaurant here opened in 2000 and since then has only grown in popularity with base residents. According to management, the goal is to serve the base populace and provide Airmen with a sports lounge on base. "We want to make sure everyone has a good place to eat and provide good entertainment as well," said Louis Smith, assistant manager. "As a young Airman, this is your club. It's meant to match places downtown and provide you with an on-base option to have a good time." With "having a good time" as the motto, J.R. Rockers also features two 100-inch projection televisions and two pool tables. They also show many of the popular sports events like Ultimate Fighting Championship fights, football games, basketball games and much more. People can also request sports events to be shown. "Just give us a call and if enough people are interested we'll see about showing it on the big screens," Mr. Smith said. While watching their favorite sports event, patrons can choose from a wide variety of food. "We serve a varied menu, from burgers to wraps to nachos," said Donna Naves, Rockers cook. "The burgers are probably the most popular item we have. People love it." Mr. Smith also added that dishes similar to those that are popular in local large-chain restaurants are added to the menu from time to time. "We have our own spin on the dishes, but we try to make sure we're serving what's popular," Mr. Smith said. For people in a hurry on their lunch break, Rockers also offers a speedy buffet line. "Most people only get an hour for lunch," Mr. Smith said. "The buffet line is to speed things up and put a nice hot meal out there. You can still order off the menu as well, however. Everything we prepare is cooked to order. Nothing is pre-cooked." Another popular feature at Rockers is the different themes featured throughout the course of the week. For instance, Monday night is family night. "Family night is geared toward the military family," Mr. Smith said. "Children ages 10 and under eat free per adult that pays for a regular meal. We also show cartoons and kids shows on the TVs. Sometimes we even bring a clown in." Tuesday nights feature "two-for-one" burgers. Wednesdays and Fridays feature bar food, which is free to club members. Thursdays features ribs. Another feature at Rockers is the specialized party nights, like Latin and Hip Hop night.
