A day associated with cards, flowers, confectionary and romance, Valentine's Day is Feb. 14 and Minot Air Force Base is getting in the spirit.

This year, couples are encouraged take part in many different events and promotional packages being offered through the 5th Force Support Squadron.

Events this year include: "Sweetheart Night" at Rough Rider Lanes, where couples can bowl four games for $12; and a Touch of Class dinner at the Jimmy Doolittle Center beginning at 6 p.m., which will feature a menu of field greens salad, beef tenderloin covered in an orange béarnaise sauce, vodka shrimp served over tomato basil linguini, oven-roasted fresh veggies, and New York-style cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert.

Additionally, a comedy show is planned at J.R. Rockers, which will include dinner and standup comedy from comedians Wayne Burfeind and Tammy Nerby.

"The 5th Force Support Squadron like all Manpower, Personnel, and Services agencies AF-wide, are in place to support the war-fighter and give back to our customers at every opportunity," said Capt. Kevin Carmichael, 5th FSS operations officer. "This Valentine's Day is an excellent opportunity for the members of the squadron to do just that. The various activities and offerings available throughout our facilities will hopefully provide Minot Airmen and families with a wide selection of options for entertainment and quality food."

Additionally, Nancy Bowers, with the Airman and Family Readiness Center here, says Valentine's Day is a great opportunity for couples to strengthen their relationship.

"Valentine's Day is perhaps the most symbolic day of the year as far as intimate relationships are concerned," she said. "Today's hectic lifestyles require so much of our time and energy to be focused on work and family needs ... by setting aside this one day of the year and planning something meaningful for your significant other, your efforts will contribute to stronger and happier relationships throughout the year."

Although Valentine's Day is one day set aside to do something special for a significant other, Ms. Bowers stressed that couples should remember to show small frequent acts of love often.

"Consider using Valentine's Day as a day to commit to one another that you will foster, protect, and strengthen your relationship on a daily basis by doing one nice thing every day that shows your love for one another," she added.
