UND to offer in-state tuition to all qualified U.S. Armed Forces veterans Published April 24, 2009 David Dodds, Office of University Relations MINOT, N.D. -- Beginning this summer, the University of North Dakota will offer U.S. Armed Forces veterans a University education at a cost equivalent to the tuition charged to in-state residents. UND President Robert Kelley has approved the tuition-waiver program for all UND students and prospective students who have earned veteran status as defined by the North Dakota Century Code. The action allows student veterans to attend classes and be billed the same tuition as North Dakota residents, regardless of state of residency. "I can't think of many things more selfless and deserving of our gratitude than asking someone to serve their county," said UND President Robert Kelley. "The University of North Dakota's new Veteran Tuition Waiver program is our way of saying 'Thank you!' to these men and women who put personal pursuits on hold and put themselves on the line for the entire nation." Alice Brekke, who is currently serving as vice president for finance and operations, said that the tuition waiver would apply to undergraduates, graduates, medical students and law students at UND. According to the North Dakota Century Code, a "veteran" is an individual who has served on continuous federalized active military duty for 180 days or fulfilled the period for which the individual was called or ordered to active military status for reasons other than training, and who was released from duty under other than dishonorable conditions. Also, a discharge reflecting "expiration of term or service" or "completion of required service," or words to that effect, qualifies the shorter term of service as making the individual a veteran. UND will use the same processes to verify an individual's veteran status that is currently used for financial aid purposes. This is accomplished by requesting a copy of the veteran's DD 214 discharge papers, which would be reviewed by Carol Anson, veteran certifying official at UND.
