Vehicle passengers may be held responsible for driver's actions

If you're in the passenger seat when the driver gets arrested for driving under the influence, your base driving privileges may get revoked for up to one year. The same goes for passengers when the driver gets a ticket for reckless driving, racing or other vehicular conduct which endangers the general public.

The revocations affecting passengers are a recent change to the base traffic supplement. The 5th Bomb Wing commander's intention with this change is to instill passengers with a sense of responsibility so they will take a more active role in preventing drunken or reckless driving. When going out for drinks, have a solid plan for getting home. Designated drivers should not consume any alcoholic beverages, even if they think they can drive safely after "only one."

If your driver refuses to listen to reason and you can't safely prevent the individual from driving, find another way home that's safe. Airman Against Drunk Driving (838-2233) is available when "solid plans" go south. For more information, contact the 5th Security Forces Squadron's Reports and Analysis section at 723-3488.
