Come see what’s new at Outdoor Recreation Published June 10, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Keith Ballard Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Many different outdoor activities are available to the men and women of Minot AFB through the 5th Force Support Squadron's Outdoor Recreation office--and new options are around the corner. For example, paddle boats are now in stock. According to Rachel Filkins, manager of Outdoor Recreation, there are 4-seat models available with an accompanying trailer. Customers may also transport the boats in the back of their trucks. Smaller versions of the boats are available as well, Filkins said. Outdoor Recreation also purchased two fishing boats with 90-horsepower motors to replace the ones currently on-hand. For the camping fanatics, there are new packages that include several different items like a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, coolers, a lantern, and other items--all reasonably priced at daily, weekend, and weekly rates. A bouncy slide, a bouncy castle, a tycoon-typhoon flying money machine, and sumo wrestling suits have been purchased for the kids and the young at heart. These are available for a flat rate of $75. Some of the summer events available include horseback riding trips, a whitewater rafting trip, swimming lessons, a water carnival, and two free movie nights at Bud Ebert Park. Filkins said the June 26 movie is "Bedtime Stories," starring Adam Sandler. "We will have a concession stand set up so people can purchase popcorn, soda, and candy," said Filkins. The movie August 21 is "Race to Witch Mountain," starring The Rock. The movies will start at 8:00 pm each night, so reserve your spot by 7:30 pm, Filkins said. One of the biggest services available to the base this summer will be a new 3-D archery range. The range will be set up by the paint ball course on the south side of the base, Filkins said. The paint ball course will move deeper into the wooded area, and the archery range will occupy its former location. The archery range is set to feature many new 3-D targets; the grand opening is Aug. 15, with an archery tournament scheduled to be held the same day, said Filkins. The south gate will be opened to the public with a demonstration being held by the "World's greatest expedition shooter, Byron Ferguson," said Filkins. All tournament participants need to register by Aug. 13. For more information about these and other services available from Outdoor Recreation, please call 723-3648. Pamphlets and brochures of all the services are available, so stop by or call today.
