Knowing your road conditions Published Oct. 14, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Benjamin Stratton Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Knowing what each road condition means during the winter months is vital to mission success here. Please see below for an explanation of what each condition means to you. Green Road Conditions: Describes normal day-to-day conditions. Air Force personnel and their dependents are encouraged to drive with caution. Yellow Road Conditions: Describes a degraded environment. AF personnel and their dependents will travel only when necessary and wear proper protective garments for working conditions. Drivers are strongly encouraged to apply Operational Risk Management while navigating the roads in such conditions. Red Road Conditions: Describes a degraded environment when hazardous travel and working conditions exist. AF personnel and their dependents are restricted to mission essential travel only. Drivers are strongly encouraged to apply ORM while navigating the roads in such conditions. Black Road Conditions: Describes a degraded environment when no travel or working conditions exist except for storm essential personnel and bona fide emergencies. Black applies only to Minot AFB and adjacent Hwy 83. During road condition Black, storm essential personnel are authorized to respond to their work sections using an all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile. During Black, the installation entry controller will stop outbound vehicles and inform occupants of the following: current travel condition, inform active duty military members (if directed by higher authority) they are not allowed to exit the base, civilians will be encouraged to remain on-base, but will not stop them from departing if they request to leave.
