Through the snow they roll Published Jan. 27, 2010 Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- A large winter storm was expected to hit the base and local communities over the weekend with blizzard-like conditions. However, the full brunt of the storm didn't strike until late in the evening on Jan. 24. Road conditions were set to red the morning of Jan. 25 signaling to many shops the need for early release. Although the temperatures may have only had a low of 8 below zero and a high of 18 above zero, the winds reached speeds as swift as 36 mph and sustained at 35 mph, said the duty forecaster with the 5th Operations Squadron weather flight. The heavy winds and snow fall made prime conditions for whiteouts throughout North Dakota.
