A stroll on horseback Published April 19, 2010 By Staff Sgt. Keith Ballard 5th Bomb Wing Public Affairs MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Those of us who have grown up with horses, or just been around them, know what it is like to experience the calming effect these animals have on our day-to-day lives. A stroll on horseback through fields and over trails is how many horse owners relax and enjoy spending time with their families and friends. Many of us see horses as a way to let go of the daily grind of balancing work, family and responsibilities; at least for a little while. Whatever the reason, horses are a great way to relax without all the stresses of daily life. Many opportunities exist within North Dakota for those with horses or those that have always wanted to give horseback riding a try. There are four state parks which provide riding trails to horse owners. These parks are Little Missouri State Park, Sully Creek State Recreation Area, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and Fort Ransom State Park. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers a trail covering 120 miles stretching from one part of the park to the other. Most of these parks cost $6.00 a day for use and some have some restrictions that a rider may need to be aware of before they arrive. Riders should contact the park directly before arrival to make sure they are in compliance with all park regulations. For those individuals wanting to experience the thrill of horseback riding without actually owning a horse, a trip to the North Dakota Badlands may be just what you need. There are companies offering trail rides through this majestic area with prices ranging from $30.00 to $70.00 per ride. The base Outdoor Recreation office offers trips to the Badlands with transportation there and back. For more information regarding these trips, contact their office at 723-3648. If you already own a horse or are thinking about buying one for yourself or your family, the base has the Dufresne Riding Club. The club's facilities include a 60-acre stable behind Bud Ebert Park. For more information about the club, call the club president at 727-6975. Horses and horseback riding is an adventure that should be experienced at least once in your life. Are you ready for your horseback adventure?
