The distance between Minot and Bismarck is a brushstroke on canvas, or an imprint on clay. The non-profit organization of Bismarck Art Galleries Association opens their doors to artists of varying skill levels, with the displayed artwork representing a cross-spectrum of our country's talent.

Of the displays, "One-third is local, one-third is regional, and one-third is national," said Linda Christman, executive director.

Anyone can display their artwork at BAGA, provided they are a member-artist. The annual membership fee for an artist is $25.

"There are approximately 370 members, 170 artists, and 125 active artists," said Christman.

Those who are active in producing work become part of a display cycle that rotates monthly. Each such artist has the opportunity to unveil and sell their artwork for an entire month in BAGA.

As collections from around the nation arrive at the gallery, "It's like Christmas once a month when we unwrap what the next exhibit will be," said Christman.

One can prepare and present art without medium guidelines. Christman said that any type is accepted: pottery, mixed media, sculpture, metal art, water color, pastels, etc.

"We're the best kept secret in North Dakota," beamed Christman.

Workshops are available for anyone interested in learning more about art. One does not have to be a member to sign-up for a class.

The allure for art can rightly draw anyone into the BAGA. From the clean white walls to the contrast of yester-year brickwork, the setting is nostalgic and displays are sophisticated.
Christman shared a picture from 1990 of the building--an old railroad warehouse. The facility was purchased that year and renovated into its current state in 1991. The only structure that remains of the former facility is one, lone white-brick wall.

Funds are raised to sustain the building and its initiatives via underwriting, grants and general fundraisers. Every year there is a large-scale fund-raising initiative, in May or June--and other special events including a "Capital Affair" (arts and crafts sale), and a country-club wine tasting event.
