Workplace safety for us all Published Sept. 22, 2010 By Tech. Sgt. Rhonda Armstrong-Penney 5th Bomb Wing Ground Safety MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- Because Airmen spend a majority of their day at work, many in jobs at higher risk for accidents and injuries, workplace safety is just as important as safety at home. Slips, trips and falls are some of the most common accidents that can happen in the workplace. Most of these accidents occur because there are no areas delegated for workplace and personal items. Items scattered throughout the workplace create tripping hazards. Other accidents are caused by simple mistakes such as forgetting to put up 'wet floor' signs. Workplace safety is paramount for the successful mission of Air Force Global Strike Command and its Airmen. To prevent some of the most common mishaps, ensure personal belongings are safely secured while in the workplace. Simple habits like cleaning up spills immediately and keeping drawers properly closed help prevent falls. Statistically, accidents occur more often when a person descends down a ladder than a person is climbing the ladder. Falling from ladders is most often caused by the sliding of the ladder base. For self-supported ladders or stepladders, the main cause is tipping sideways. Even carrying ladders can result in back injuries. If possible, have two people carry ladders. Whenever there are machines present, there is always a possibility of electrical malfunction. Regular checkups and maintenance of electrical appliances must be a primary concern for electrical safety. Too many wires plugged into one socket can lead to short circuits, frayed wires and electric shocks. Food and liquids can cause malfunctions and even lead to fires. Everyone should be constantly aware of the machines they are using and report any problems or hazards immediately. Fires can be the result of negligence or a genuine problem. Regardless, everyone should be familiar with escape routes, fire extinguisher locations and key emergency phone numbers. Taking these precautionary steps along with being aware of hazards and potential hazards the office a much safer place. Workplace safety is not something that is seasonal. It is a critical topic that can never be ignored. By doing so, not only are Airmen safer and healthier, but also more efficient to carry out the very vital missions of Minot Air Force Base.
