Legal office to hold "Will Week" Published Jan. 14, 2011 By Capt. Hakala 5th BW Staff Judge Advocate Office MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Minot AFB legal office will be holding its second annual Will Week Jan. 18 to Jan. 21. In order to assist the Minot AFB military community, appointments will be available Jan. 18 and Jan. 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Jan. 19 and Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this week there will be no walk-in legal assistance, except for notaries and powers of attorney. Regular legal assistance hours will resume the following week. Who needs a will? Practically everyone can benefit from having a will, especially individuals with children or significant assets. All states provide for the distribution of a person's property and care for minor children when he or she passes away. The distribution of property and care of children varies from state to state. A will is a testamentary document that expressly states who should receive your property and take care of your children in the event of your death. A military will is valid in all fifty states and U.S. territories and remains valid until properly revoked. Creating a will not only gives you the power to decide who will receive your assets and care for your children, it can also save your family substantial probate costs and give you peace of mind knowing that your estate is in proper order. What's more, wills are provided by the base legal office at no cost to military members, retirees, and their dependent spouses. To schedule an appointment, call 723-3026. Prior to attending your appointment, you must go to https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil and fill out a will worksheet, which is found under the "Legal Worksheets" tab.
