The Airman's Attic has traditionally been a venue where Airmen and their families can go to and attain uniform attire including other miscellaneous items for free.

Ensuring this venue continues to provide its services is the Minot Enlisted Spouses Club, which supports the establishment solely through volunteer work.

Shanya Hughes, Airman's Attic bookkeeper, said she continually works there because she likes volunteering for events and anything that involves helping out Airmen and their families.

"I'm one of those people that volunteers for everything," said Hughes. "Volunteering here is a good way to network as well. I get to meet new Airmen all the time."

The Airman's Attic currently supports over 800 families and has provided more than 54,000 items to Airmen and their families so far this year.

The majority of the inventory at the facility is donated and consists of uniforms, adult and children's clothing, books, toys, and shoes among other items.

Terra Henry, Airman's Attic coordinator, said Airmen are encouraged to stop and check out what they have to offer.

"Airmen E-5 and below can come by and take 25 items for free," said Henry. "Books, shoes, toys and winter clothing for 'first-year in Minot' Airmen are unlimited."

She said services the Airman's Attic offers extend to all ranks on the first Thursday and the last two Wednesdays of the month.

Hughes explained that they do their best to continue to provide services but sometimes it can be difficult to recruit volunteers to work. At times their availability is so low that they unfortunately do not open sometimes due to such low-manning.

She encouraged interested volunteers to come out and help. In-home daycare is provided by the Airman & Family Readiness Center for volunteers who assist at the Airman's Attic.

"We are also always looking for Family Child Care providers who can help with taking care of children so that volunteers can come out and help at the Airman's Attic," said Hughes.

Despite the challenges, both Hughes and Henry expressed they were happy to help out Airmen and their families.

The Airman's Attic is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those interested in volunteering at the Airman's Attic can contact their staff at 723-1818.
