Are you going to PCS? Don’t forget about pet care Published April 26, 2012 By Army Capt. Morgan Mander Veterinary Treatment Facility, OIC MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- With so many things preoccupying many as they prepare to PCS, getting their furry family members ready for the move can sometimes get overlooked. Depending on where you plan to travel, preparation can take up to 180 days. If you have pets, please call the Veterinary Treatment Facility as soon as you find out that you will be moving. Each location's requirements for vaccinations, microchip and testing are slightly different. We can provide you with location-specific instructions and help you initiate the process. After registering your pet at the VTF, appointments for the vaccines, parasite testing, health certificates and FAVN blood test (rabies titer) can be scheduled. Appointments fill quickly and you will be required to provide us with your pet's rabies certificate, proof of ISO compatible microchip and stool sample at least 24 hours in advance. When making your appointment, consider the following questions: · When are you traveling? · Where are you going? · What mode of transportation will you be using? · Does your pet get carsick or anxious when traveling? · Will you be boarding your pet? · Is your pet on Heartworm prevention? The right options for your pet can be discussed at a pre-PCS appointment. There are several options available that might make the trip more comfortable for you and your pet. If you are deploying and your pet can't stay with family or friends, a separate organization, like Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pets, may be able to provide long-term care for your pet. Check out www.guardianangelsforsoldierspets.org for more information. Planning ahead can help make the transition smooth and easy. Appointments are generally available Monday and Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., by calling 701-723-6449. The VTF is located at 300 Missile Ave. between J.R. Rockers and Burger King. Have a safe trip!
