Minot State University to host Flag Day Ceremony Published June 11, 2012 Minot State University MINOT, N.D. -- Minot State University Veterans Center will host the Minot American Legion Post 26 to perform a flag ceremony to properly dispose of unserviceable flags. The ceremony is scheduled for Flag Day (June 14) in front of Old Main, at 11 a.m. The United States Flag Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day, and in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation -- one nation, under God, indivisible. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon. National Flag Day gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to the American flag, the ideals it stands for and the sacrifices made to preserve them. The Flag of the United States of America represents the lives of thousands of Americans, who have given everything for this nation, who ask nothing in return, but felt an obligation of duty to their country.
