MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- SrA Alexis Wheeler is a training instructor for the 5th Security Forces Squadron. She trains 600 SF Airmen every week, reinforcing their tech school education, and ensuring that they retain the knowledge needed for their career field. Being the only female instructor on her team, Wheeler says she works just as hard as any of her coworkers.
“I don’t want that stereotype of the female that’s not as capable. I don’t want women to be better, I just want us to be even,” said Wheeler.
Wheeler says that she holds a strong voice and tries to assume leadership positions in order to stand out from her peers.
“I just try to have a lot of face time,” said Wheeler. “I’m an instructor so the 600 people who need training already see my face once a week.”
Wheeler said her goal is to commission and become a pilot. She was accepted into the Airman Scholarship Program for military justice and will commission afterward.
“Change people’s minds,” said Wheeler. “Show them there’s no difference between men and women."
Wheeler said her inspiration is her mother. Having served as a security forces Airman in the Air Force for 23 years and continuing to serve as a government contractor, Wheeler says her mom has been a very strong female role model.
