MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- A Great Horned Owl nests along his young ones here in a local Minot Air Force Base neighborhood May 16. Owls like these tend to use abandoned hawk, eagle, or crow nests as shelter, but will also nest in caves, hollow trees, and even at ground levels. In North Dakota, great horned owls begin their nesting as early as February and quite often form nests in small groups of trees. Neighborhood members have expressed these owls have helped diminish mice and rat infestations. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Jose L. Hernandez)
