7/15/2014 - MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Rough Rider Golf Course is hosting free golf lessons to all members of Minot Air Force Base every Monday beginning at 6 p.m.

The one-hour lessons are available to anyone 18 years or older who would like to learn the basics of golf.

"My vision starting out is to teach things people can learn easily," said Jerry Brown, manager of the Rough Rider Golf Course. "Anyone can putt, and it's about 40 percent of the game."

Having a solid foundation in golf fundamentals, and confidence in their own abilities, helps players to move on to more complex skills, explained Brown.

"If you're teaching someone a sport and you can give them success early, it builds their confidence in the game," he said.

With 31 years of experience Brown teaches everything from the fundamentals, like putting, to more advanced techniques such as driving and chipping.

"I want to get people interested first," said Brown. "Once they get good at the basics, then we will move to another, more challenging aspect of the game."

The sport is easy to learn and doesn't require a player to have big muscles or a lot of experience, explained Brown.

He eventually hopes to bring in more experts to perform demonstrations of complicated golfing techniques.

"I'd like to recruit more people to play golf and promote the game," said Brown. "Golf can give people a good way to get involved in a new sport and get out of the house."
