Sweepers, plows and a variety of other heavy equipment keep the roads and runway at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., operating and allow for mission accomplishment, even in the event of blizzards and ice storms. The 5th Civil Engineer Squadron Heavy Equipment Section employs contractors to operate the sweepers. This partnership plays a critical role in keeping the mission at Minot AFB running smoothly during the winter months, by clearing upwards of 70 inches of snow a year from the runway. In addition to working with the 5th CES, contractors also partner with Balfour Beatty Communities to assist in clearing snow from base housing and its walkways.
