A look in history: Trip heard ‘round the world

TORREJON AIR BASE, Spain -- Fifty years ago on Jan. 11, 1962, this crew of eight Airmen embarked on a historic feat that would take them half way across the globe and reaffirm to the world America’s dominance in long-range aircraft strike capabilities. Piloting the newest model of long-range bombers, the B-52H Stratofortress, these crewmembers broke 11 non-stop distance and course-speed records, for its aircraft class and time, when they successfully completed a more than 21 hour non-refueled flight-- flying approximately 12,500 miles across the globe. Operation Persian Rug was the name given to the pivotal flight. (Courtesy photo)

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE - (Back) From left to right, Team Minot Chiefs Group representatives: Chief Master Sgt. Rob Hansford, Chief Master Sgt. David Mclain, Chief Master Sgt. Robert Wege, Chief Master Sgt. Robert Rohn, and Chief Master Sgt. Ginney Jones (U.S. Air Force Reserves), presented (Front) Terra Henry, Airman's Attic coordinator, Shanya Hughes, Airman's Attic bookkeeper, and a Erin, a volunteer, with a check donation of $150 dollars Jan. 10, to help supply them with funds to buy cleaning supplies and other necessities to help keep the store open. Every year the Airman's Attic helps support hundreds of Airmen and it is up to volunteers to ensure it continues to do so. The Airman's Attic currently supports more than 800 families on base.
