Deactivation of the 608th Strategic Operations Squadron and the activation of the Joint Nuclear Operations Center (JNOC) and Standoff Munitions Application Center (SMAC) was officially recognized during a ceremony at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, Oct. 15.

While the 608th STOS has played a valuable role in the past, today Air Force Global Strike Command conducts bomber mission planning, tracks fleet movements and communicates to combatant commanders through the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center (J-GSOC). Both the SMAC and JNOC are working parts of the J-GSOC.

The SMAC is a planning cell that works directly with geographic and global combatant commands and their air components to develop standoff weapons plans. The JNOC provides situational awareness of bomber, missile and reconnaissance capabilities to U.S. Strategic Command for planning and execution.

Overall, these new units represent an important addition to the capabilities and efficiency of the J-GSOC.

“Deactivation of the 608th STOS and activation the J-NOC and SMAC is going to greatly increase our warfighting capabilities and increase the lethality of the J-GSOC,” said Maj. Gen James Dawkins Jr., Eighth Air Force and J-GSOC commander. “I am looking forward to see what these units accomplish in the future.”
